Text The starting point of this project evolved during researching the ongoing conflict between differing social groups regarding their interests in one of the most attractive pieces of fallow land in the heart of Berlin: the Spree riversides located between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.






Through iteratively distributing programmatic layers resulting from the surrounding city fabric onto the site and systematically mixing volumes of different social characteristics the motive of a foam structure appears. The quality of formal variety as a consequence within the heterogeneity of the overall system is implied into the arbitrative design methodology called function aesthetics. Focusing onto the space partitioning strategy of Voronoi regions features gradient-driven diversity in creating highly functional orthogonal structures as well as distorted and geometrically complex volumes. Pointclouds generated from early studies of programmatic foam structures are therefore manipulated locally depending on functional-programmatic attributes. Consequently, the result articulates the geometric variety as a foundation for partitioning into Voronoi cells.

 



The emerging spatial strategy offers interesting interactions within social-territorial typologies which are scenically described and particularly illustrated around the area of the created hybrid-cluster intersecting the existing "Viktoria" storehouse building. Moreover, possible scenarios regarding the social-territorial distribution are demonstrated within milieu maps carrying information about physically and theoretically adoption of space units. Additionally, different concepts are defined for regulating and ensuring social-characteristic diversity within the subsystem of the study area.

Hi Patrick congratulations , your project looks awesome, I would like to know how you figure out the final arrangement of points for creating the voronoi cells , like for example i f you used a particle systems or which parameters you take in count for creating the spaces.

Hello Rodrigo, thanks for the text and sorry for the delay. No particles or self-organization yet :( points were established by simple hierarchical rules like vertical and horizontal distribution. The main features are attractores given by programmatic densities which are influencing the order of the three dimansional point grid. Therefore, different geometries are generated by the voronoi algorithm in respect to programmatic needs (living, office, workshop, leisure...). Does that clear things up?

Yeah c'mon haven't you seen the models? The thing will be made out of plastic bubbles, styrofoam and copper wires! Seriously, that should work until the concrete squirting mars robots are invading.

Dear Anonymous,

that means that the aim and architectural focus of the project is rather located on social-territorial dynamics for that specific site location than pure materialization.

Technically, the different units of the structure are proposed in various finishes ranging from key-ready pre-fab concrete cells, to more easy-to-reconfigure materials such as wood, dry lining and perforated metal cladding, to finally the bare steel framework which is supporting structurally and supplying necessary infrastructure.

I'm well aware that mars robots aren't a solution. Thanks for your questions.

Amazing work Patrick, i am in fact finishing my master´s thesis on the Voronoi diagram as structure and space. After searching for other proposal i stumbled upon yours and realize the depth of this kind of architecture. Congrats!
